These activities are applicable in grades K-2. They cover math concepts under the following domains: Number Sense, Operations and Algebraic Thinking, Geometry and Measurement. There is also a strong focus on Standards of Mathematical Practices 2 & 3: Reasoning and Constructing Viable Arguments.
In each picture, students may be able to see addition problems, subtraction problems, doubles facts, fact families, geometry, one/two less than or one/two more than stories, measurement, patterns, and more.
In the first step, students write down the math they see along with a math sentence when necessary.
In the second step, students add to the picture to create a new math observation.
In the third step, they collaborate with another student to explain a different math observation and reason why they stated what they did.
Pictures include some of the following scenes: superhero, animal, picnic, gingerbread neighborhood, archeologist explorer, cupcake decorating, gum ball machine, gnome, camping, beach and more.
As your students get practice with these pieces, encourage them to ‘see’ the math in your classroom, on campus, at home, in the market, at the movie theater...
Soon, the will see ‘Math Everywhere’!
