Teachers can personalize the anticipation guide depending on the topic they are teaching. At the beginning of the unit, this graphic organizer can be used to activate students' background knowledge and help them build curiosity about the topic.
Through the unit, students read texts about the topic, and decide whether they change their mind of agreeing or disagreeing with statements listed on the guide. They have to write down quotes to support their stances, and made reflections on the "double entry journal" section. This practice allows them to read for a purpose, and to read texts more closely.
At the end of the unit, students explain how their thoughts on different statement have stayed the same or changed by using textual evidence gathered in the double entry journal.
