Because April is poetry month, this resource is being given away for free. Federico Garcia Lorca, one of the greatest poets of the 20th Century wrote two poems called “Es Verdad” and “Cancioncilla del primer deseo” that Marta Gomez, a contemporary Colombian musician has adapted into song. Links to the songs are provided. English translations are provided.
There are many links to video, audio, and print resources for studying Federico Garcia Lorca’s poem. Also included is a TED Talk on crushes and a heartbreaking Story Corps on unrequited love. The students will also read an Atlantic Monthly essay, “The Train in Spain,” that features Federico Garcia Lorca’s reflections on Galicia.
The lesson features an original prompt analyzing the poems. Students will craft a persuasive thesis sentence. Instructions and strategies are included on how to teach a SIFT analysis and hold an inner and outer Socratic Circle. Three sample student essays, scored by an experienced AP English scorer for the College Board are provided with commentary on each essay.
