Whenever you want your student to explain their math reasoning, have them roll a dice. If they get a 1 or 2, they need to explain to you using pictures or math tools, 3 or 4 they need to explain to you verbally or writing words, a 5 or 6 they need to explain to you using numbers and number sentences (for more information, see my blog post at
