The Giver, by Lois Lowry, is a classic middle school novel. Instead of asking students to take a test over the book, why not have them create a project?
In this free product, you will find six ideas to allow students to ponder the book, talk about it with others, and share with others how they connected to the book and how it changed their thinking, all in a creative way. After doing a project, students are more likely to be able to describe the theme. For middle school students, I would have them spend 3 – 5 days on an alternate project and then write a claim paper on what the theme of the book is.
