I use free time as a behavior management strategy in my classroom. I have found it to be very effective. You can add in free time at any point of the day you choose. I have it built in after our ELA block and at the end of the day. I reset their free time cards after every "Free Time" time. For example, if a student loses a minute of free time, after our ELA time, I reset them back to "I earned all my free time" so they have the opportunity to earn all their free time at the end of the day. If a student is not following directions I take a minute away. If the behavior continues I take another minute away. When it is time to earn free time those students who had minutes deducted from their free time need to sit out for that amount of time, and then can earn the rest of their free time. I have uploaded a picture of what my free time chart looks like in my classroom. All students start on "I earned all of my free time." Behind each "I earned all of my free time" card is each 1 minute, 2 minute, 3 minute ect. card that I move to the front each time a student loses a minute of free time. I have a polka dot theme in my classroom which is why mine are polka dot. If have a different theme and would like a different border for your classroom you can email me and I will make one for you!
