Inferring is a hard skill to teach and to assess.
I found that my first grade students do so much better when I scaffold their instruction by giving them the inference and asking for the text. They finally began to be able to give me the inference when I gave them the text. We are still working on completing the entire graphic organizer independently, but this will be better to leave for 2nd and 3rd graders.
This is a great way to introduce, practice and assess.
