The American Experience Freedom Riders documentary is a great film to show students that shows in depth the struggles of the civil rights movement and the brave freedom riders who risked their safety to bring civil rights to the American South. Scroll down for a free link PBS has posted for the movie. I like this film because it isn't your typical dry, stuffy documentary; they have interviews with the freedom riders, along with tons of archival photographs and video clips. It truly opens up my and my students' eyes to the horrors that minorities had to live through.

I like to show this film during African-American history month, while teaching African-American literature, To Kill a Mockingbird, or The Help.

My guide has 20 questions that cover the beginning to the ending of the film. Because of some images of violence (it's not too graphic), I would only show this documentary to high school students.
