This mini unit focuses on the MJC (Maison des Jeunes et de Culture) in France. These are local recreation buildings in French towns where children and adults go to play sports, take classes, participate in special events such as concerts. This project begins with a web search focusing an several MJC in France. Students go to the sites and record information what what can be done there. The next part of the unit has students create their own ideal MJC in groups and they present it to the class. Following the presentations each student chooses an MJC that interests him/her and fill out a form to register. The documents included in this unit are: web search activity, project description, grading rubric, and registration form. Students really enjoy this unit and learn lost of new vocabulary in process. It's also a great way of weaving an important cultural piece to the curriculum.
