One of my favourite ways of creating excitement in students towards second language learning is to tap into something they already know and enjoy. This project is designed to have the students create their own loveable animal with a crazy twist. Students begin by planning what their ideal animal might look like. After designing their pet, the students are given basic core French description questions. This activity is directed towards A1 level learning outcomes and can be used as both a written and an oral production activity.
To create the animals, I often use a Styrofoam ball covered with coloured tissue paper and add eyes, mouth and 'paws', as desired. For further fun, the students enjoy creating a structure at which to 'toss' their crazy animals!
