Teaching students French food/drink vocabulary can be challenging because the number of food and drink items is so large! Sure, we will all teach our students the most obvious ones like « les frites », « le croque-monsieur », and « la limonade », but my experience has been that there are literally DOZENS (if not hundreds!) of vocabulary words that I could include in my French food/drink unit. So, how do I choose words that are relevant to my students, while still keeping the list of required words relatively limited?

This year, I created this vocabulary activity, which allows me to accomplish the following pedagogical objectives: 1) promote student choice; 2) integrate technology; 3) implement a student-centered lesson; 4) encourage students to work collaboratively in a small-group setting; and 5) foster student engagement. This activity ended up being a MAJOR SUCCESS, and I am so excited to be able to share it with you!

The purpose of this vocabulary-building activity is to allow students to choose what food/drink items they would like to learn. Students will work in small groups. Each group is responsible for selecting diverse foods and drinks that have not already been taught, researching them in a French dictionary, finding appropriate images online to represent the food/drink item, and finally constructing a context-rich sentence in order to promote long-term vocabulary retention. Students edit a shared Google Doc, adding their vocabulary, images, and sentences...best part of all? This student-created document ends up becoming their class notes!

I have included detailed instructions and suggestions for implementation, as well as everything that you will need to implement this vocabulary activity in your classroom. MINIMAL PREP required!
