When asking my grade four students what their favourite activity was this past year, most voted for this one. It is a way to get to know your students by having them create their own 'treasure chest' of favourite things/activities.
An oral presentation of the contents of their boxes is the primary goal, however, you can also include a visual arts expectation.
I used a symposium format for the oral presentation, having the students sit around the classroom, in a circle, with the contents of their boxes displayed in front of them (on their desks). I then asked who would like to talk about, for example, their favourite animal, and then the discussion/sharing just continued.
A great way to get your students talking, in a non-threatening environment!
