Schepeezophobe is a memory matching game with a twist. You can customize the name by taking out "Schepeez" and substituting your name (thus the kids are afraid of you...lol). Be aware that the opening screen "screams" so be prepared (and don't tell your kids if you want to see them jump).
To start, split the class into two teams and divide each team into pairs. Each pair gets a grid (available for free by searching Schepeezophobe Grid). Students may work only with their partner but score points for the whole team. To score a point, a pair must uncover two squares that match. For example a weather expression will match a calendar vocabulary word (winter and it snows)
To play, select a pair to start. They ask for 2 numbers in French (a great way to introduce "je voudrais"). They must give 2 numbers at a time. Click on the number on the grid and it will link to text. Students copy the text onto the grid exactly as written. I have the students read the text aloud to practice pronunciation. Click the scream face to return to the grid and repeat the step for the other number requested. When all have copied, ask if it's a match. If so, the team scores a point and the next pair on the same team asks for two numbers. If not a match, the other team gets a turn. Play until all matches are made.
It will happen that a pair of numbers will be requested (like 6 and 10) and not match but will match other squares already uncovered (6 matches with previously uncovered 13). When this occurs, the current team's turn is up. It's important that no one blurt out that there's a match because the other team may find it since it will now be the other team's turn. I also don't allow two pairs on the same team to help each other out. It stops the "brain of the class" from dominating the game.
Here's the twist~ there are 25 squares and only 12 matches. The extra square is a Schepeezophobe. It's a bonus and often a tough question or a fun task that the team that uncovers it has to complete. If you've sung a song during a previous lesson, have the team sing it. I give a bonus 2 points if the team is successful.
The game is over when all matches are made. I often award an extra point or two on the test which is often the next class.
