A comprehensible-input activity with a targeted-output twist! Get your students up and moving with this reading and speaking activity. Corresponds to Bon Voyage Level 1 Chapter 2, but can be used with any beginner French curriculum. Focuses on school/course vocabulary, as well as descriptions with être.
1. Print out activity sheets. (Color printing allows you to see the French sentence in blue and the English sentence in black, which is nice but not necessary). Can be laminated for repeated use!
2. Cut out cards along the lines.
3. Distribute one card per student. Each card includes a French sentence and its English translation. (27 cards are included in this set. For larger classes, simply print out additional copies. It's ok if some sentences are used more than once!).
4. Have students stand up and find a partner in the room. (I usually use Stand up! Hand up! Pair up! for this, but any method is fine as long as each student finds a partner. For classes with uneven numbers, pair up two students to travel the room together).
5. In each pair, one student begins. Student 1 will read their French sentence aloud. Student 2 will listen and then translate to English. Student 1 will check the translation and then coach or praise. Next, students switch roles, and Student 2 will read their French sentence aloud, etc. To end the round, Student 1 and Student 2 trade cards and circulate around the room to find a new partner.
6. The teacher can monitor the room and check for comprehension. Call time whenever it seems like the students have had a chance to read/say multiple cards.
7. Follow up activities include: Asking student volunteers to read their card aloud to the class and randomly calling on students to translate, having students use their card as a starter sentence for a free write, or drawing a picture of the action going on in the sentence and then re-writing the French sentence. Opportunities for follow-up and enrichment are endless!
