I made these self-regulation trackers for my students this year. Each child had one on their desk. In the morning they would set the bead to how they were feeling. It let me see how they were feeling at the beginning of the day, and throughout. I could quietly check in with them if needed. They were also encouraged to use their tracker throughout the day as needed. I would remind them to use it after each recess, etc. I explained to my students that the goal is to be in the green zone. It's the optimal state for learning, and for feeling good. I explained that we all go from one state to another, and that there are activities to help us get back into the green area. Different activities help different people get back into the green area so they could choose which ones they wanted to do. Sometimes one activity might help, other times they might need to do several activities before they were back in that green area. I had my own self-regulation tracker that I used to model for the children. I kept it on the blackboard, and adjusted it as needed. They couldn't believe when I was in the yellow or red area. I would sit on my chair and model deep breathing. Sometimes I would tell them that I needed a minute to calm myself, and I would go and sit at my desk while they worked quietly. It helped them to see that these emotions are normal. It also allowed them to develop empathy for others. They learned not to bother someone who was in the red because they just weren't ready to talk at that point. I taught them that they could ask if someone needed help if they were in the yellow, but that they should also respect that person if they said no. I also taught them how to use the activities quietly without bothering others. When I first introduced the jumping jacks one, they all wanted to do it and it was mayhem! haha. I reiterated that we only use them when we need them. After a few days the novelty fizzed out, and students were only using them when they needed to. I had the most challenging class of my career this past year. MANY of my students had self-regulation difficulties. These trackers helped my students to make gains in developing an awareness, and then track how they were feeling. It also helped them to take ownership of their self-regulation. I have a corner in my classroom called "Coin de relaxation" or "Relaxation Corner" where students can go at anytime if they need a few minutes to themselves. Only 1 child can go at a time. It's a great space where they can go and try to calm themselves down. I have a box with some different things it in, including a sparkle jar, a timer, and some fidget or squeeze toys. I use a pocket chart on a frame with wheels to give that space some privacy. It is worth using space in my classroom for this relaxation corner!
I was inspired to make these self-regulation trackers after reading "Calm, Alert, and Learning" by Dr. Shanker from the MEHRIT Centre, and "Lost at School" by Dr. Ross Greene. I have since read Dr. Shanker's new book "Self-Reg", and it's also a really eye opening, useful read. I HIGHLY recommend them if you want to learn more about self-regulation! I plan on sharing these trackers with the parents of my students this year to help with that home/school connection. :)
To put together:
I laminated each card so that they were durable. They get A LOT of use! Make some extras because you will likely need them, especially for the little ones that move into the red area.....
You need one pipe cleaner, a pony bead, some tape, and a hole punch.
Punch a hole where the little vertical lines are. Put the pipe cleaner in one end, and then slip on the pony bead. Thread the pipe cleaner through the other hole, and then fold the ends back behind the card, and tape them down. Tape the self-regulation tracker down on the desk. Use lots of tape!
