This syllabus is used for a second-semester freshman literature class, often called ENG 102, 103, 104, or 105. Students are usually required to compete a freshman composition class before moving on to this course. In the syllabus, I have underlined the parts that you might want to change, based on your school or department requirements. In the sample course schedule, which is based on a two-day/week class, I have grouped the literature into thematic units. Each day, students read both a short story and a poem, which have a thematic connection to each other and to the entire unit. I also include a Shakespeare play in my course, but feel free to include any play of your choice. The semester ends with a research paper.
