The Freshwater PowerPoint and bundle covers both standing (lentic) and flowing (lotic) waters and water pollution.
In the standing or lake portion, types of lakes and pond succession is discussed. The three types of lakes included are oligotrophic, mesotrophic and eutrophic. Also covered are wetlands, including marshes and swamps.
The flowing or river portion covers the different river zones. The zones discussed are the source zone, transition zone, and floodplain zone.
Water pollution first distinguishes between point source pollution and non-point source pollution. Each type of pollution also includes examples. Finally, eutrophication is defined and discussed.
The lab associated with this bundle is an aquatic macroinvertebrate lab. Students LOVE this lab. Students use macroinvertebrates found in water sources to determine water pollution. Even if your students cannot do the actual water collection, samples can be brought in by the teacher and the lab is still a great success.
One assignment in this bundle includes questions about Texas freshwater zones. Even though the reading, questions and job opportunities focus on Texas, they can be used by other areas very easily. This is actual a great assignment and should not be overlooked if you are not from Texas.
