In this lab, students will compare the amount of friction as they pull a piece of wood across different surfaces. They will change the mass of the wood and see how it affects friction as well. At the end they will need to draw a free body diagram of the wood block.
Materials needed: 2x4 piece of wood with a hook, spring scales, standard masses, sandpaper, carpet. (Note: wood blocks can be substituted for anything you can hook the spring scale to, and if you don't have standard masses you can use rolls of pennies or anything to weigh the wood block down.)
