# Friction Lab Stations Activity

Product Description
SNAPs Lab Stations Activities require students to use science, math, literacy, problem-solving and engineering skills. They are designed to enhance students' understanding of scientific concepts and help students apply scientific ideas to the real world. Each station activity promotes skills so to develop students into proficient and competent scientific thinkers.

SNAPs lab activities have five components:
Science Skills Station to develop science skill proficiency
Narrative Station to build science literacy
Assessment Station to evaluate learning and understanding
Problem-Solving Station to foster engineering design
Synthesis/Summary Project to inspire higher-order learning

A description of the activities at each station in this particular lab is detailed below.

Next Generation Science Standards
This laboratory does not address a specific Next Generation Science Standard, but it complements concepts related to other NGSS. This lab combines the three dimensions of science learning - science and engineering practices, disciplinary core ideas and crosscutting concepts. This laboratory also makes interdisciplinary connections to STEM, Math CCSS and ELA CCSS to build the appropriate skills.

Friction Lab Stations Activity Learning Objectives
1. Engage in conversation about friction.
2. Identify a relationship between the smoothness of a surface and friction.

Science Skills Station
At this station, students will investigate how the smoothness of a surface impacts the force of friction exerted by that surface. Students will make predictions, conduct an investigation and draw conclusions from the observations and measurements made during the investigation.

Narrative Station
At this station, students will read an informational text about friction. They will have to cite information in the text in order to answer questions about friction. Students will also watch a video about friction in race cars.

Assessment Station
At this station, students will answer questions about key terms and ideas relating to friction. Students will have to employ lower, mid and higher order thinking skills to answer these questions.

Problem-Solving Station
At this station, students will design, build and test a slide. They will use various materials to create a slide that allows a toy doll to easily, but safely, move down.

Synthesis/Summary Project
Students will have a choice of 11 projects. Refer to the SNAPs Lab Stations Best Practices and Setup Guide for directions and suggestions on how to conduct the project.

Stopwatch, ruler or tape measure and scotch tape
1 toy car and 1 foot of Hot Wheels® straight track (or other toy vehicle track)
Aluminum foil, sandpaper, piece of thin wood or cardboard, piece of rug or carpet
3-4 books (to create a ramp)
Construction paper, cardboard, popsicle sticks, pipe cleaners, straws and playdoh
Rubber bands, tape and/or other adhesive
A toy doll
