This is a unit I created that incorporates social studies, culture, the fine arts, working with time lines and the Spanish language. It is intended for grade 3, but can be adapted to higher levels depending on skill level and language being used in the classroom. You can use this lesson in a couple different ways:
1. Learn/read/research about Frida Kahlo, then look at the painting (Self-Portrait Dedicated to Leon Trotsky, 1937), answer the questions, do the time line activity, create the art project and then assemble as shown in the photo. The second part would be to have the students create a time line and self-portrait of themseslves. You could even have the students exchange self-portraits and answer the same questions from the Frida Kahlo piece or create new questions.
2. You can reverse the process and have the students do time lines and self-portraits first and then move onto the Frida Kahlo portion.
This unit includes some resources, lesson plan, Frida Kahlo painting questions in Spanish and English, art project directions, large blank time line and inserts to arrange and glue onto time line in both Spanish and English, a small version of the time line in both Spanish and English, answer sheets for the time lines, and a blank time line sheet for students to write their own events in both Spanish and English.
