Friday morning Newsletters:
Every Friday morning we write a newsletter to our parents telling them what we did that week.
We end the year with roughly 40 of these newsletters in their writing portfolios.
During the first few weeks I have them cut out the words that they will use to help with their fine motor (cutting) and establish “wordness”. The only thing they will write on the first few newsletters is their name on the bottom. I would suggest you fill in the DATE before you photocopy the newsletters.
When they are ready to start writing, you can try the tracing pages. Use mine or dot your own letters but I am big fan of having them trace yellow highlighters, it’s faster than dotting the word for them.
As the year progresses, they start writing/copying the words from either the bottom of the paper or the whiteboard.
By the end of the year, the students are doing the whole newsletter by themselves with invented spelling and punctuation.
