For Friday homework, give students this wonderful opportunity to keep writing, research, and responsibility skills sharp. Choose an innocuous news headline or topic that is easily researchable. Keep in mind the limits of students' weekend abilities (access, time, home support), and require that an attempt is made to find the answer. Discuss this answer on Monday morning.
You can write 1 question or more than one, and adapt to grade/reading level of your class.
This is a great ice-breaker; a splendid Monday morning eye-opener, and a perfect way to expose students to the world around them. There are several "kids' news" websites if you're ever stumped for a subject!
