Product Description
Friday the Thirteenth occurs a couple of times each school year.
I enjoy teaching superstitions with my upper elementary students. It is a good opportunity to talk about facts, opinions, and beliefs. I usually have several students who have lived in other countries. Superstitions are often a part of other cultures. We talk about respect for other people’s ideas and beliefs.
The four activities started with a writing prompt. Students brainstorm or research a list of superstitions. Then they write a list poem or short story called The Unlucky Day. Alternately, they could write a poem or story that follows a good luck/bad luck pattern. The next two pages have poems that may be used as mentor texts. They list several common superstitions that could be a beginning for the brainstorming and research processes.
The next page students use existing superstitions and change key words to create their own versions.
The final page has a fortunately/unfortunately fill in the blank story. Students can treat this as a stand-alone activity or the beginning of a short story.
