Letter to Myself:
I use these in the first week of school. I have students record their thoughts and feelings about school and their life. I then collect them and store them for the year. During the last week of school, I pass them back and use it as a reflection piece for students. You can have them make a thinking map to compare similarities and differences as well!
Letter to a Friend:
I use these periodically throughout the year. Sometimes I will pass them out and let students choose any student to write to. Other times, I will assign a name to each student. This creates a great chance to build classroom community, build self esteem and practice writing skills in a fun way!
Letter to a Teacher:
I use these as a way to check for understanding. I ask students to reflect on lessons and describe what they learned. I also allow students to ask any questions they may have and to record any current feelings. When grading them, I write responses back to each student. It is a great way to build relationships with students!
