This mini-unit or writing design challenge integrates the philosophy of a STEM design challenge with a writing activity. After having some prior knowledge of life long ago vs. today, students are challenged to write a letter to a friend as if they were living long ago. The KSBs (knowledge and skill builders) are carefully designed activities to do with students that will help them successfully complete the challenge. There are 5 KSBs in this unit with all the necessary materials.
You can use this design challenge after doing a larger social studies unit or even just one small lesson or read aloud about life long ago and today.
Pretend you and your friend or relative lived long ago. You will have to write a letter to your friend or relative. Your letter must include at least 3 sentences and 2 questions. You must include 3 activities that you would have done if you were a boy/girl living long ago. Your letter must include a body, and a proper date, greeting, closing, and signature.
Your family is taking a trip to the post office this Friday! You must complete it by Friday if you want your friend to get the letter any time soon!
