This activity has students responding to the text in a real-world writing activity. Students will write a friendly letter from one or more characters in the text. Includes a sample friendly letter AND information on addressing an envelope for an optional companion activity. Also includes a friendly return letter, to respond to a friendly letter from a classmate, or their own. Rubric and grading provided.
Activity includes a sample friendly letter with annotations on the parts of the letter. While friendly letters do not require organization, students will still need to use good structure and organization in their letter (and this is noted in the sample.)
Also includes an optional envelope addressing activity. Can be completed with a box of envelopes or on half sheets of paper. Students will write the recipient and sender addresses and add an illustration of a stamp. Given the importance of addressing letters, and how few students will do so before paying bills in adulthood—this is a great real-world activity to include.
