Do you want your students to be confident and capable mathematicians? I believe that for this to happen, students need to be equipped with a range of strategies, which they can add to their math tool belt!
These worksheets help teach your students how to use the different numbers that add up to TEN (1+9, 2+8, 3+7, 4+6, 5+5) as an addition strategy.
4 + 7 + 6 = ?
Step One: Look for any 'Friends of Ten' in the question. Spotted! 4 + 6 = 10
Step Two: Add on what is left over to your total. 10 + 7 = 17
5 + 8 + 15 = ?
Step One: Look for any 'Friends of Ten' in the question. Spotted! 5 + 15 = 20
Step Two: Add on what is left over to your total. 20 + 8 = 28
These worksheets focus on how to apply this strategy to ADDITION questions. Currently I teach a class with VERY diverse abilities and I understand that there is not a ‘one size fits all’ worksheet. However, I have created these eight worksheets, with the intention that there is hopefully one for all the ability levels in your class (and also mine!). Students who need support will be taken right back to the very beginning of the strategy and supported with basic skills and number knowledge. Likewise, students who need to be challenged will be given a chance to apply the strategy though word problems. Detailed answers are also included.
I love this strategy and I love teaching it! I hope you and your class enjoy using this resource.
