Many primary teachers use Friendship Fruit Salad as a beginning of the school year activity to help establish classroom community. This activity takes that idea and puts a different spin on it- this is designed for use in 3rd or 4th grade classrooms to begin to teach close reading strategies.
Students read a story about a class making Friendship Fruit Salad. Then they use the close reading strategy of highlighting the answer in the text to answer 5W questions. Finally, students create their own 5W questions about the text.
A proficiency scale is included for the standard.
