Thanks for checking out my Frindle Close Reading Lessons! Whether you are reading Frindle as a class or as a read aloud, or have already read this together this year, these lessons are sure to stretch your students' comprehension with actual texts from this popular Andrew Clements novel.
Close Reading activities are all the “buzz” with Common Core State Standards and a focus on deeper thinking across the curriculum. In this Close Reading Activity Pack, you will find reference to several passages in the novel, Frindle, by Andrew Clements, and comprehension activities to guide your students through a close reading experience. I have not included the text from the book, in keeping with copyright rules. Chapters and beginning key words are given so you know where the close reading passage begins and ends. I suggest that you make a separate copy of the specific passage for your students so they can underline, highlight, and mark up the section.
Teaching students to “read closely” is key for students to understand what they are reading and to make connections with future readings. Close reading instruction should be separated into three parts: a general reading for understanding of the text; a reading for analysis of the deeper content; and a final reading for craft and structure analysis. As technical as these reasons sound, teachers can experience success with their students at a very young age.
This Close Reading pack comes with 4 separate close reading activities. These can be used separate from the book, but will be most powerful for your students when taught in sequence with the reading of the novel (I have a unit plan that will help you do that!), or after reading the book, going back for a “closer look” at the different events in these passages.
The following activities are labeled as a Reading1, Reading2, or Reading3 activity; however, use your own discretion as to when to use them, based on the needs of your students. The goal is to dig deeper into their understanding of the text. The Reading1 activities can be used with any of the selections. The Reading2 and 3 activities are labeled for specific chapters. Also included in this pack is a set of general templates that can be used with other Close Reading passages.
These pages are intended for a single classroom use. If you wish to share with colleagues, please direct them to my TpT store to purchase their own Activity Pack, or purchase multiple license to share.
