Problem Solving can be a difficult task for many students, especially when they lack the knowledge, skills, and confidence to approach word problems in a successful manner. Dr. Thomas Carpenter, founder of CGI (Cognitively Guided Instruction) believe that students can be successful in solving math problems when the problems relate to things they know and when they are given the opportunity to explore all possible strategies.
This year I am implementing CGI math problems throughout my math time. I want my students to not only be successful problem solvers, but I want them to think more critically about the information presented in the problems. How can begin to solve the problem when you have no understanding of the problem.
Students of all ages can approach problem solving with confidence, so give it a try.
