Our solution? These comprehension activity printables. They’re aligned with the Common Core…beautifully illustrated…and will help your students to capture the very essence of Andrew Clement’s work.

Each printable is cleverly titled and focuses on a specific literary skill while testing the comprehension and recall of each chapter.

Chapter 1a - “Sensational Setting” addresses visualization, setting, and has students recall and reread for key details.

Chapter 1b - “Funny Times” addresses mood through character actions and dialogue, and also includes questions requiring text evidence.

Chapter 2 - “Meet Mrs. Granger” addresses character traits and requires text evidence to support the traits chosen.

Chapter 3 - “Magnificent Metaphors” addresses Andrew Clement’s use of metaphors and the reasons behind their creation. Questions that require inferencing, text evidence, and text details also included.

Chapter 4 - “Hideous Homework” addresses complex vocabulary, requires dictionary work, and includes a paraphrasing challenge.

Chapter 5a - “Continued Conflict” addresses the various types of conflict in literature and has the students answer questions related to the conflict of the story.

Chapter 5b - “Relentless Reporting” requires students to properly sequence key events from the chapter.

Chapter 5c - “Interesting Idioms” addresses Andrew Clement’s use of idioms and requires the students to interpret them.

Chapter 6 - “Finding Frindle” requires students to properly sequence key events from the chapter.

Chapter 7 - “Pick a Side” examines the ongoing conflict between Nick and Mrs. Granger and includes an opinion question that requires text evidence. Vocabulary questions requiring text evidence are also included.

Chapter 8 - “A Detention Dilemma” examines cause and effect and requires students to cite various “effects” in the chapter.

Chapter 8b - “Good Grammar” reviews the proper use of “can” vs “may” and provides student practice. Text detail questions are also included.

Chapter 9 - “A Frindle Fiasco” requires students to summarize the conflicting opinions of Mrs. Chatham and Mrs. Allen. An opinion question requiring text evidence is also included, along with additional metaphor practice.

Chapter 10 - “Media Mania” requires students to answer text detail, text evidence, and inference questions surrounding the topic of the chapter.

Chapter 10b - “Rigorous Reporting” addresses the 5”W’s” and “H” of a newspaper article, and has students brainstorm those elements for an article of their own.

Chapter 11 - “Alliteration in the News” - addresses alliteration, has students identify examples from the chapter, and requires the students to brainstorm examples of their own. Additional text details, inference, and text evidence questions are also included.

Chapter 12a - “A Frindle Frenzy” addresses character change. Sequence of events, inference question, and vocabulary work is also included.

Chapter 12b - “Major and Minor” addresses main and minor characters. requires students to identify them, and includes some art work too!

Chapter 12c - “A Flat Character” examines flat characters and requires students to highlight character traits with text evidence.

Chapter 13 - “The Ripple Effect” requires students to cite the many effect of a key “cause” from the story.

Chapter 14a - “Point of View” examines first and third person point of view, and requires the students to answer questions pertaining to the point of view of Frindle.

Chapter 14b - “Dynamic Nick” addresses the concept of a dynamic character and has students work with antonyms and text evidence to prove Nick as a dynamic character.

Chapter 15 - “Express Yourself” - Students express their opinion, and strengthen it with text evidence.
