Looking for a new way to introduce your frog dissection unit? Give the Frog Hospital a try.
For years, I was introducing frogs by verbally giving two days of notes. Lets be honest, the kids checked out 10 minutes into day one.
This activity gets kids up out of their seats and collaborating in a mock hospital environment.
Students in each class are put into groups of 3 - 4. Each group is assigned one of the "departments" that is attached. Each "department" page contains information about that body system within the frog. (Cardiovascular, excretory, etc). They spend day one (roughly 35 minutes or so) creating a poster to explain their "department" to the class.
Once the posters are all done, students are given a copy of the Frog Hospital Note Guide **See note guide at the end of the PDF document. As a class, we make our way around to each department, like doctors in training and we fill out the note guide based on the information that is provided by each group. I play the role of cheif of surgery and co-teach it with them. Students are allowed to ask questions if there is soemthing they didn't get.
We then demo a frog the next day and dissect the following three days. My kids had a BLAST doing this. This activity can easily be adapted to your own kids or teaching style. ENJOY!!!!
