Another Way to Play – Real or Nonsense
Students pick an onset frog and see which words they can create with their gameboard. They record the real words in the first column and the nonsense words in the second column. I have included recording sheets.
You can print out this resource as is, and omit printing the backings, or you can follow these directions to print back to back:
Print page 1 & 2(these directions and seller’s info).
Print page 3 - frogs with onsets (beginning consonants and digraphs)
Place page 3 in the printer’s paper tray face up and facing you.
Print page 4, and the reverse images of the frogs will print out on the back.
Print page 4 – more frogs with onsets
Place page 4 back in the printer’s paper tray face up and facing you.
Print page 6, and the reverse images of the frogs will print out on the back.
Print pages 7-24. Pages 7-13 are lily pad gameboards with rimes on them. 5 of the lily pad gameboards each have 6 rimes sorted by vowels. I have also made 2 gameboards with 12 rimes and mixed vowels for more advanced students. Print as many of the advanced gameboards as needed or just skip that page for now.
Pages 14-25 are the optional recording sheets. There are 8 recording sheets in 2 sizes: 8 in color and 8 in black and white. Colored sheets can be laminated and placed in a sheet protector or laminated. Students can use erasable markers. The black and white sheets can be copied for students to use pencils to record. 8 of the recording sheets are for students to record the cvc words they build. The other 8 sheets are for the second way to use this activity where the students decide if a word is real or nonsense.
Page 25 contains Optional Word Builder Awards in Color and Black and White.
Pages 27, 28, 29 & 30 are 4 pages of pond scenery to make things a bit more realistic. These can be folded once lengthwise and placed over the sides of an “upside down” file folder box lid. You can place the frogs text side down in the lid to make it appear that they are in a pond setting. You can place green or blue construction paper or aluminum foil in the bottom of the lid.
Cut the frog sheets on the paper cutter into 12 square cards each. Frogs can simply be placed text side down, and students draw a frog card OR for more fun, place a paper clip on the mouth of each frog. Secure a magnet onto a piece of string or yarn, and attach to a straw or ruler. Students hover the “fishing rod” over the shiny water (a cardboard copy paper lid covered with aluminum foil works fine.) and catch a frog as it adheres to the magnet.
Then the student blends the onset (beginning sound) that is on the frog to the rimes (word chunks) that are on the lily pads The frog can be placed on any lily pad that can be made into a word. The winner is the first student to fill the lily pads on his or her gameboard. This activity can grow with your students at various levels of blending onsets and rimes. There is also a higher level with onsets that are 2 and 3 letter blends, as well as more complex rimes.
