Have your students engage with the content and with one another in this authentic cooperative group activity!
This activity is structured to have your students be truly interdependent as they work together in their groups. Included is a thirty question STUDY GUIDE that they will go over together for about ten minutes prior to starting the lesson.
The students will be put into groups of five students. You will go around the room giving out the sixty CLUE CARDS to your students. Each CLUE CARD has half of one of the STUDY GUIDE questions on it. Depending on the size of your class, each student will get two or three of the sixty CLUE CARDS. You will give each student a CLUE SHEET. They will copy the information from their CLUE CARD onto the CLUE SHEET.
The students will then move around the room for about five minutes exchanging CLUE CARDS with one another and writing the information on their CLUE SHEETS. No student will be able to get close to the sixty clues that will be needed to put the questions together so they can answer them. But with four other people from their group also gathering clues, the group should be able to get all the clues it needs.
After five minutes of exchanging clues, the students will return to their groups. Each student is then given an individually numbered (1-5) DIVIDED QUESTION ANSWER SHEET which makes each student responsible for putting 12 questions together from the clues gathered by the group and finding the answer for the question. Every student in the group will have clues that all the other need and each will also need clues that all the other members of the group have. The DIVIDED QUESTION ANSWER SHEETS have point values on them so you can set this up as a competition among your groups.
Every member of the group will also get one of five different ANSWER SLIPS. Each slip has six of the thirty answers to the STUDY GUIDE questions on it. No answer is repeated on any slip. If they fail to remember an answer to one of the STUDY GUIDE questions, they can check with their group members for help from the ANSWER SLIPS.
Every student in the group will have clues needed by every other group member to complete their sheets. They will also need clues from the other students. The students will have to talk to one another to be successful! Every student will have to participate to achieve group success.
Both the STUDY GUIDE and the DIVIDED QUESTIONS activity are part of a ten activity packet which includes five cooperative group activities and five engaging games covering the transition from Paleolithic to Neolithic.
