Searching for great resources to help students understand the Cold War Space Race and what a huge challenge it was to make it all the way to the moon in just a decade? Look no further than this From the Earth to the Moon worksheet
covering a key episode from the acclaimed HBO series!
The series has 12 episodes, but finding time to show them all would be nearly impossible in a class setting. For that reason, I've broken out my worksheet set on the series into individual episodes so you can buy only what you need.
ABOUT THIS FROM THE EARTH TO THE MOON EPISODE 2 WORKSHEET
"Apollo One" focuses on the fire that swept through an Apollo capsule during an on-the-ground test. Three astronauts were killed, including one of the nation's very first.
This episode is a really great way to start studying the space program because it shows students in stunning detail just how many difficulties plagued the Apollo program in its early years. Students today tend to think that landing on the moon was a relatively easy thing to do. This episode demonstrates just what a huge technological -- and dangerous -- challenge it was.
The episode also shows how NASA investigated the disaster and persuaded Congress that the space agency was indeed capable of carrying out the mission entrusted to it by President Kennedy.
EPISODE 2 SUMMARY
"Portrays the tragedy of the Apollo 1 fire from the perspective of its subsequent investigation by NASA and the US Congress. Its effects on key individuals are shown, including Harrison Storms of North American Aviation, Joseph Shea of NASA, astronaut Frank Borman charged with supporting NASA's investigation, and the widows of Gus Grissom, Ed White and Roger Chaffee."
HOLD STUDENTS ACCOUNTABLE FOR THEIR VIEWING
This worksheet provides students with 23 questions to answer and includes both true/false and multiple choice items. Since the question types are not mixed together, teachers who want some flexibility can use the true/false during viewing and the multiple choice afterwards as a discussion springboard or a quiz (or vice-versa).
A full answer key is included.
