Mental Math Units: the Complete Addition Collection

Front end addition is an extremely powerful mental math strategy for adding numbers with two or more digits. In this mental math strategy unit, students will learn to add two two-digit numbers using front end addition. This means adding the tens first, and then the ones. For example, for the equation 24 + 53, students will learn to first add 20 and 50 to make 70, and then 4 and 3 to make 7. Subsequently, the 70 and 7 can be added to equal 77. With repeated practice, students can become very quick and efficient adders when using this strategy. Once learned and practiced, this strategy is much more efficient and accurate than traditional vertical addition.

This is a very large mental math strategy pack that is separated into two sections to provide you with everything you need to teach and have your students practice front end addition. Included is independent seat work, flashcards, center activities, whole class kinesthetic learning activities and more! Section 1 focuses on front end addition without regrouping. This includes equations such as 23 + 34 or 65 + 12 where the ones digits never add to more than 9. In Section 2, students will learn and practice front end addition where regrouping is necessary. This includes equations such as 46 + 29 or 64 + 17 where the ones digits add to ten or more.

Enjoy!
