Looking for a strategy to input information and build background knowledge prior to reading a new text or learning new content? Try Frontloading! This strategy is especially beneficial for ESL students but can help aid learning with all students.
In my classroom, students used this chart* with our economics vocabulary. I chose important curricular vocabulary from our state’s standards and from text the students would later read. The discussion and work my 2nd graders experienced with this frontloading activity helped improve their understanding and confidence with a content-related text.
*I learned about this chart at an ESL workshop instructed by Dr. Virginia Rojas. I loved it so much that I created this friendly elementary version.
This product includes a blank chart meant to be printed double-sided and can be used in any content area. Two student samples and a detailed description of my classroom implementation are also included.
