This is a versatile project that works as an old-fashioned printed Text Set OR as a "Web Quest" if you are lucky enough to have technology available to you in your classroom!
The good news is that this project works either as a frontloading exercise OR as a project to complete after they have started reading as a way to support their learning.
By the end of these two class periods, students will have researched a topic (either individually or with a partner), made an individual poster, presented their poster and notes to a small group of up to 7 students, and taken notes on up to 6 other topics in addition to their own.
The 8 research topics included are: Alaska, At.oow, Devil's Club (the plant Cole grabs ahold of during the bear attack), Spirit Bear (Kermode Bear), Tlingit Indians, Totem Poles, Peter's Brain Injury and (newly added!) Circle Justice.
a) 8 Topic Notetaking Guides with website addresses and guidelines for note taking
b) 17 Printable PDFs of the texts (in case you cannot access the webpages listed on the above Handouts). These webpages/texts were chosen with varying levels of complexity in mind and are organized from Low Complexity to High.
c) Lesson Plan Instructions
d) A Student Criteria for Success Handout
e) A Presentation notes grid for students to jigsaw the other topics as a group
All Topic Notetaking Guides are given in Microsoft WORD format to allow for editing. Since it is a Web Quest, website addresses DO change and you may need to modify that. That's another reason why I have included printouts of the sites… so you will always have the information in case something happens. However, I periodically update all links to ensure functionality and all links are up-to-date as of: 12/15/2015
