If you’re looking for the most fun and engaging way to teach students about different poets and poetry analysis, then you’re going to LOVE this set of Poet and Poem Studies! They’re designed with doodling, interaction, and creativity in mind!

That’s because they include informative Doodle Articles about each poet: Langston Hughes, Robert Frost, Emily Dickinson, and Maya Angelou. The coolest part is that students answer questions and create doodle responses to the nonfiction text about the poet directly in the article!

Then, students take the doodling a step further and complete Doodle Notes about each poet. So much fun! After students have developed a strong background on each poet, they’ll analyze one of the poet’s poems.

Finally, they’ll participate in repeated readings of the poem as their analysis of the poem becomes more and more complex. They’ll use their understanding of the poet as a basis for aspects of their analysis. Students will record their poem interpretations in an interactive flip book.

These Poet and Poem Studies are fun, educational, and a perfect way to study poetry in the classroom! You can teach them in succession as part of a large poetry unit, or you can spread them out over the course of an entire school year!

Resource Overview:
• This bundle includes Poet and Poem Studies for Robert Frost, Maya Angelou, Langston Hughes, and Emily Dickinson.

• Students will read a nonfiction passage about each poet. The article is an incredibly unique DOODLE ARTICLE. While reading the doodle article, they’ll answer questions and sketch doodles directly in the passage to show their understanding of the text.

• Then, students will fill in a Doodle Notes page to creatively respond to the text about the poets. Students will practice skills in sequencing, connecting to the text, questioning, evaluating, and synthesizing as they complete the Doodle Notes page.

• After building background information on the poet, students will analyze the following poems: “A Time to Talk,” “Harlem,” “Life Doesn’t Frighten Me,” and “A Bird, came down the walk.”

• Each poem is accompanied by a five-page interactive flip book. Students will complete repeated readings of the poems to develop deep interpretations and comprehension.

Added Bonus: As part of the Doodle Articles about the poets, students will color and cut out a quote card with an inspirational quote from each writer. So fun!

There are 3 engaging learning activities in each Poet and Poem Study:

Nonfiction Reading: Students will learn about each poet as they read a nonfiction passage about the writer. The passage is interactive. As students read, they’ll show their understanding of the text by answering questions, making connections, and evaluating the text. Students will showcase their learning through doodles and sketches. This makes the passage extremely engaging and meaningful.

Doodle Notes Response: After students read the informational passages, they’ll complete a doodle notes response page. Students will fill in the doodle page with information from the passage. The visual nature of the doodle notes response makes the poet study super fun.

Poetry Analysis Flip Book: Once students have built background information about each poet, they’ll analyze a poem by each writer. Students will record their learning in interactive flip books.
