The Fruit Salad Song is a great way to encourage students to collaborate to make a delicious fruit salad. You do not need to use all the fruit items listed in the song. The resource is designed with a launch pad allowing you to sing about only the subset of seasonal fruit items that you had planned to include. A multifaceted star in the upper right corner of header will allow you to return to the ‘fruit launch pad/chorus’ to select the next item to be added to the fruit salad.
This resource is ideally personalized. With a little bit of effort you can use the change picture command of PowerPoint to subtitute photo faces of your students for the face illustrations provided in the downloaded song. Please refer to several blog posts that explain this process.
Each student can be assigned the task of preparing their fruit item. You can certainly make this portion of the activity a literacy activity by providing a written assignment or a symbol-supported instructions for each fruit item. e.g., Banana: 1. Peel the banana. 2. Throw the peel in the trash. 3. Use a knife to cut the banana into small slices. 4. Put your banana slices in a small bowl. Blueberries: 1. Wash the blueberries. 2. Remove small wooden stems. 3. Dry the blueberries on a paper towel.4. Put the cleaned blueberries in a small bowl. It may be helpful to set a timer to establish a time frame for getting the prep work completed. When it’s time to re-convene to assemble the fruit salad, the song can be used to allow each child to dump their small bowl of fruit into the larger bowl.
This resource can be presented large on the ‘big screen’ (interactive whiteboard, large screen TV using apple TV and an iPad) or the ‘small screen’ (computer monitor, iPad). The pen tools of the interactive whiteboard can be used to write in student names. If you’ve opted to not personalize your resource, children can still have fun inventing names for the imaginary characters in the song. If you are in charge of a particular fruit item, then you have ‘naming rights’ for the imaginary character depicted in the song. The Facilitator then writes the assigned name on the interactive whiteboard using the pen tools.
