Dr Edward Fry famously identified the most frequently used words in English using corpora databases containing millions of texts. The first twenty words in his high frequency word list represent approximately 49% of all words children encounter in their reading lives at school.
This booklet lists the 10 highest frequency words in the English language. Print the sheets out onto yellow or gold coloured paper and cut them into strips.
This page is part of a series for the 200 highest frequency words. Each strip for the first 100 words is printed on different coloured paper. Students collect a new coloured strip each time they can read/write/spell the list of words, depending on what target you, the teacher, set for each list.
They are designed to complement the spelling sheets I have designed, which present each word individually, in different fonts, and holistically in a contextualised sentence.
I hope they are useful for your literacy programme!
