Description

Designed by an Occupational Therapist, this resource provides 100 pages to practice writing each of the first 100 Fry Sight Words. Practice pages are presented in a sequential order according to the list of Fry Sight Words.

  • First children try writing these words with a finger in a variety of tactile media such as sand, shaving cream, or a Ziploc bag filled with colorful gel. Or make the words with Play-doh! This helps children master the “kinesthetic feel” for correct letter formation and they become familiar with the spelling of sight words.
  • Next, children practice the letters in each sight word and then write the entire word. Directional arrows for letter formation are provided for each letter. Remind children to start their letters at the top. Send these pages home for more practice!

Sight words are often words that children cannot sound out phonetically, such as “have”, “there”, and “of”. Other sight words can be decoded, including “and”, “like”, and “get”. Sight words are also referred to as high-frequency words and can make up half of the words in many reading passages according to the Reading Research Center at the University of Iowa.

Children typically master sight words through frequent, meaningful, and repeated exposure. Repeated practice with sight words solidifies a child’s ability to memorize them. Exposure can include seeing, writing, finding, coloring, and building sight words.

The first 100 Fry Sight Words include the following:

a, about, all, an, and, are, as, at, be, been, but, by, called, can, come, could, day, did, do, down, each, find, first, for, from, get, go, had, has, have, he, her, him, his, how, I, if, in, into, is, it, like, long, look, made, make, many, may, more, my, no, not, now, number, of, oil, on, one, or, other, out, part, people, said, see, she, sit, so, some, than, that, the, their, them, then, there, these, they, this, time, to, two, up, use, was, water, way, we, were, what, when, which, who, will, with, words, would, write, you, your
