Fry High Frequency Sight Word Flashcards
“These are the most common words in English, ranked in frequency order. The first 25 make up about a third of all printed material. The first 100 make up about half of all written material, and the first 300 make up about 65 percent of all written material. Is it any wonder that all students must learn to recognize these words instantly and to spell them correctly also?”
This quotation and the following 1000 words are taken from: The Reading Teacher’s Book of Lists by Edward B. Fry and Jacqueline E. Kress. p. 51-57.
A child’s reading ability, confidence and fluency will improve as they memorize more and more of these sight words. I have been using these words for more than ten years in my classroom with my students and have watched as my students have improved their reading skills and confidence year after year.
These flashcards were designed to be easy to use and effective. Each page includes eight flashcards (the left half is the first 50 of each set of 100 and the right half is the second 50). Each flashcard is 2.75 inches by 4.25 inches so that an 8 ½ by 11 inch sheet of paper can be cut easily, without wasting paper or making unnecessary cuts.
The flashcards are designed to look simple, without any distractions, using a serif font so that students will be able to recognize the words as they will see them in print.
