This resource is part of my Painting Books series! Painting books provide an opportunity to integrate art with the academic curriculum. It's simple; all you'll need is paint and q-tips! Did someone say developmentally appropriate and FUN?!?

This sight word painting book is a perfect resource to enrich and extend your curriculum. This fun and engaging art activity will simultaneously provide word recognition and fine motor skill development!

This 22-page book contains a dotted word painting page for each of Fry’s first 20 words: the, of, and, a, to, in, is, you, that, it, he, was, for, on, are, as, with, his, they, I. The book also has a cover page, and a back page with each word listed.

To prepare this activity for implementation, simply print the cover and inside pages of the book. Make as many copies as you need for your class. Please note that one printed copy will actually make two books for two students since the pages will be cut in half. After copying, cut each booklet in half and staple on the left hand side.

I recommend completing the painting portion of this activity in small groups and completing one word at a time to allow for drying time. Provide students with the paint color of your choice, as well as q-tips or another type of dabber to “dot” the words with the paint (please see cover page photo). Encourage students to identify the word and spell as they paint it. You could also use markers instead of paint if you prefer. After completing all of the pages, students can practice reading their books during center time! The dried paint will also provide a nice texture on the book pages that students can trace with their finger to practice spelling each word!

An alternative approach to implementing this activity would be to make this a center for students. Set out the word pages of your choice for them to dab rather than assembling the pages as a book.
