These sight words come from Fry's sight words list. According to Fry, the first 300 words in the list represent about 67%
of all the words students encounter in their reading.
I use these words to build fluency which we know helps build comprehension. I use flashcard and record pre and post data on sight word recognition. Once the students know the word I continue for rapid recognition. I also use these for spelling tests. I will be adding sight word games, centers, and data collection sheets soon. I teach special education and these are used every week.
It is recommended that:
• The first 100 words should be mastered by Grade 1.
• The second 100 words should be mastered by Grade 2.
• The third 100 words should be mastered by Grade 3.
• The remaining lists (words 301 - 1000) should be mastered in Grades 4 - 5.
