I wrote this lesson for the first weeks of the school year. If you have the book Summer Wheels by Eve Bunting, this lesson plan will save you time and give you a couple of sessions of good reading with your students. The lesson asks students to engage in conversations, thus getting them ready to turn and talk to partners for the school year ahead. Students are also taught how to stop and jot down their thinking about characters and their motivations. It includes all components: Teaching point, rationale, motivation/connection, materials. standards, teaching, active engagement, link, and share. I also included pictures of the anchor chart that can be used and printouts that you can use to make it. This is a great way to begin the reading workshop, and the students love the story. The lesson will take more than one session.
