I have created an entire unit for the novel Whistling Past the Graveyard and sent it to be edited and proofread by a professional editor. I used it in class last fall with my developmental-level community college students and it was a success! There are many possible topics and themes the class could explore within this unit, such as civil rights, coming of age, mother and daughter relationships, domestic abuse, hope, the personal journey and music. The unit includes three full essay assignments with clear directions and a set of rubrics as well as questions for class discussion, personal reflection or homework. I have also included journal questions as well. An entire semester can be built around this! I am sure high school students can grasp this as well.
