These are daily lesson plans for the AP Spanish Language and Cultures Theme, World Challenges. The plans require the textbook Temas (Temas, AP Spanish Language +Culture By Vista Higher Learning) and either AP Spanish, Preparing for the Language and Culture exam( by Pearson) or other AP style practices.
The unit plan contains:
Daily plans with activities and suggested time frame
grammar practices with infinitives and prepositions and gerund/ infinitive/ past participle practice
test sections for my supplemental material
There is a vocabulary unit designed for an AP Spanish Language and Culture class. It was created to complement and supplement the textbook Temas, but could be used in any other upper-level course that is studying the World Challenges because this contains the whole vocabulary unit and does not require anything from the book. The practices are fill in the blank, identifications, logical or not and write your own sentence in style. An answer key is provided for all discrete items.
The unit contains:
- A 7 page vocabulary list with the words in Spanish, in English and a definition in Spanish
The list is divided into the six contexts for the unit and the cinema short “Pecera”. The first three contexts were called vocabulary 5-1 and the last three with the cinema short words were called vocabulary 5-2.
- 1 page vocabulary 5-1 practice
- 2 vocabulary 5-1 practice overheads
- 2 homework reviews for vocabulary 5-1
- 1 vocabulary quiz for vocabulary 5-1
- 3 vocabulary 5-2 practice overheads

-La Misión – This is a movie guide for the Spanish Language version of The Mission. There are 27 thought-provoking free response questions that encourage students to think about the politics and conflicts of the time. The movie is about the transfer of the missions in Guaraní territory from Spanish to Portuguese control and the role of the Catholic Church in that decision. It is an excellent (award winning) film that adeptly shows the varying views of different groups and the resulting conflicts of interest. The economic, political, religious and environmental themes lead the movie and this guide to be perfect for AP Spanish Language and Culture classes studying the Global challenges theme, but other upper-level classes could also enjoy it. The movie is available free on-line.
There is novel guide for Isabel Allende’s La Ciudad de las Bestias. This novel was written for young people (the author has stated that her target audience was 12 year olds-native speakers of Spanish) so it is a manageable challenge for upper-level Spanish students. I have read this novel with my AP Spanish Language classes for many years and they always enjoy it and are proud to have read and understood a full novel in Spanish. There is a one page introduction to the novel and the author. I have glossed the most challenging words in the first fifteen chapters (there are 20 total chapters), heavily glossing the beginning chapters and then reducing the words in the glossary to only the most difficult ones by chapter 15. The last quarter of the book is not glossed because the students are able to read without help once they are that far into the novel. The activities includes character identifications by chapter, basic plot questions by chapter, questions requiring some analysis for after reading the novel and activities for each subtheme of the AP Spanish Language and Culture exam’s themes; Global Challenges and Contemporary Life. This novel could also spark discussion about family and communities, personal and private identities and science and technology making it useful during most units of the current AP Spanish Language and Culture curriculum.
11 page glossary of words from chapters 1-15
24 free response questions and a quote analysis for Global challenges theme
25 free response questions for Contemporary Life theme
16 free response questions for after the novel that require analysis of plot, character development, themes and symbolism
27 characters to identify (free response) as they read the novel to help students keep track of the important characters and the roles they play in the story
131 plot questions- by chapter to answer while reading to help students check their understanding
An answer key is included for all character identifications and plot questions by chapter.
