6th Grade Writing is a literature based course designed to help students expand the writing concepts, skills and strategies learned in earlier grades. Using Lucy Calkin’s Writer’s Workshop Model, students will work to deepen their understanding of the writing process. They will study a variety of literary genres including fiction, nonfiction, drama and poetry in an effort to compare and to implement different writing techniques into their own writing. In addition to studying the writing process, students will have the opportunity to review basic writing skills including grammar, punctuation, spelling, handwriting, sentence and paragraph development. Students will also work to improve communication skills via oratory and deep listening practices. Included is the Scope and Sequence for grades 5 and 6.
