This activity includes a list of 22 different French foods (along with 11 recipes), a brief description of the food, a sign up sheet, and a note to parents warning them that they will have to buy extra on their next shopping trip.
My middle school students love having Cuisine Day but I make them work for it. This page contains 22 different foods authentic to different regions of France. Each student must choose a food or drink and then bring in the results for the class to sample. Each time I've done this it's been an amazing success and the kids constantly bug me to do it again. There are also things that the students can buy, like grape juice or lemonade, in case their parents don't want them cooking. If they can't buy anything they can sign up to be helpers.
To make the atmosphere less party like, you can always have the students research these foods in a webquest and then present what they made; describing the process they went through to cook it.
